Last week, the team at Outrank.com saw an end to open community editing on Google Maps.
In the past, edits to map details would sometimes appear before being approved by Google. This was seen as an effort to make Google easily updateable with user input. However, this important change means that spammers, competitors, and customers cannot edit local business listings on Google Maps without manual review from a Google employee.

At Outrank.com, we’re very pleased to hear that Google has decided to implement manual review. We believe Google Maps listings are invaluable tools in our customers’ local search engine placement strategies, so it’s great news that our hard work to get them ranked on the front page will be protected from manipulation by external sources. It is our belief that Google will continue to adapt technologies that further strengthen the visibility of legitimate local businesses.
